Second Story Summer Camps, Empowering girls and gender diverse youth through
the arts, nature, skill sharing and play!
Second Story has been running FREE summer camps for youth in Lunenburg and Queens Counties for 20 years! Every summer we have reflected and grown, constantly updating our programming to meet the changing needs of girls and gender diverse
youth in our counties. Last summer we welcomed local artist and community partner Pamela Hart to Second Story to develop and host our summer camp programming. She brings with her skills with arts and crafts, plants, food and technology as well as an ease of rapport with youth to help build a safer, braver space for campers to be and express themselves. The camps focus on empowering youth through art, connection to nature, creative technology, collective learning, creation and play. Our goal is that each camper leaves camp feeling empowered, affirmed in who they are and with more tools to care for themselves, their communities and their environments. |

Who are the camps for?
We welcome all girls and gender diverse youth in grades 6 - 8. In line with Second Story’s commitment to completely free services our camps are also free and lunch and snacks are provided. We work to foster a space that is safe for all diversities of girls and gender diverse youth and welcome conversations in how to meet the particular needs of individual campers.
At every camp we set up a calm and cozy space filled with affirming books and graphic novels for campers that need a break from the noise and bustle of camp. We welcome campers on the spectrum and work to provide a space where all campers can feel safe and celebrated in who they are. Not all campers need quiet though! Some campers need to let off some steam and we are excited to add a drum set into our toolkit this
year, encouraging campers to let it out on the drums and build skills in emotional regulation.
Where are the camps?
Each week Second Story staff travel to a different community and set up camp for the week! Our camps are supported by the teams at Schools Plus and run in art rooms, music rooms and libraries of local schools, always with some access to forests, beaches and rivers. This summer we are hosting camps in New Germany, Caledonia, Liverpool, Mahone Bay, Chester and Bridgewater.
What does a week at camp look like?
Camps run from Monday to Thursday, 8.30am – 3.30pm. We start each morning with snacks and chats then move into some yoga stretching. Every day we focus on different creative activities with breaks for play and time in nature.
Examples of our creative activities: making friendship bracelets, hand building clay sculptures, audio recording and podcasts, button(pin) making, journal making, painting and drawing, dance, natural dyeing, making lip balm and getting into costume!
Examples of time in nature: swimming, exploring and foraging in the forest, and learning how to look after the ocean, Wabanaki forests and the meadows of Mi’kma’ki.
We work to help youth connect to their environments and nature and learn how caring for each other and nature is also caring for ourselves.
Food for Thoughts
With support from our funders and local food partnerships we are able to provide food for all the campers. Healthy snacks and drinks are available all day and we make our lunches and eat together. Some of the lunches we have made are sandwiches, wraps,
tacos and sushi.
