Second Story Women’s Centre is located in historic Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and serves clients from Queens and Lunenburg Counties. Our Vision is gender equity and safe, healthy relationships on the South Shore.  We respond to needs by providing programs and services within safer spaces and advocating for social and systemic change. We work towards equality and respect within a trauma informed, person-centred environment and support women and gender-diverse people’s empowerment.
 
We are seeking a passionate and dynamic Summer Camp Assistant to join our dedicated team. As the Summer Camp Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in providing an inclusive, person-centred summer camp experience for girls and gender diverse youth in Lunenburg and Queens Counties.  Your responsibilities cover the daily functioning of the camps and providing support to the Summer Camp Coordinator.
 
Work Conditions:
  • The Summer Camp Facilitator works 35 hours per week which will include 4 full-days at camp
  • This is an in-person position, working from various locations in Lunenburg and Queens Counties.  The successful applicant will be responsible to get themselves to and from work in the various camp locations.
  • Position starts - end of June or early July depending on availability of candidate
  • Wage is $20 per hour plus 4% vacation pay
  • Mileage will be paid for travel over 20 kms.
 
 
Responsibilities

  • Planning and logistics for camp activities in collaboration with the Summer Camp Coordinator
  • Assist in the preparation of a safety plan and implement plan if needed
  • Take part in training sessions and orientations as needed
  • Daily facilitation of camp activities, including responding to participant needs
  • Plan, procure and prepare snacks and lunches for the program in collaboration with Summer Camp Coordinator
  • Communication with guardians and participants as needed
  • Assist Summer Camp Coordinator in completing evaluations with guardians and participants
  • Assist with preparation of a final report, including evaluation of program and recommendations for future years
  • Assist with preparation of final reports for grant funding and sponsorships, including Thank yous
 
 
Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Skilled communicator in both written and verbal formats
  • Ability to plan and implement recreational activities
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures
  • Strong organization and initiative skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work with others
  • Ability to effectively represent the organization to clients and community
  • Enthusiasm for feminist, client-centred work and making an impact on the lives of others
 
 
Experience & Education:  Must be a student who is returning to school next year.  Some experience with youth is considered an asset.  Experience with a community organization considered an asset.
 
 
Personal characteristics - ethical, reliable, energetic, motivated, compassionate, passionate about equity/social justice.
