"Two special prosecutors tasked with taking on Nova Scotia's human trafficking cases are sharing some insight into what's currently happening in the province's courts.
The two Crown attorneys are the only ones in Nova Scotia who solely focus on human trafficking cases — with the second only recently hired after a funding boost from the province.

"It's very exciting to have the resources to give these very important cases due care and attention," said Alicia Kennedy, a Nova Scotia crown attorney.
Currently, the pair is handling 15 cases in Nova Scotia — the province with the highest rate of human trafficking per-capita in the country."

Keira's Law - Bill C-233

5/17/2022

Second Story Women's Centre's Social Action Committee has written a letter in support of Bill C-233, also known as Keira's Law. The aim of this bill is to increase the level of education about domestic violence and coercive control for federally appointed judges.

Keira Kagen was 4 years old when she was killed by her father in 2020. Two weeks before her death, Keira's mother asked the court to suspend or supervise her daughter's visits with her father because she was concerned about a long-standing pattern of abusive behaviour that had begun to increase. A judge adjourned the request to allow an investigation and for Keira's father to respond, but Kiera was killed before that could happen.

"....Keira was failed by a court system which is systemically uninformed about domestic violence, and did not put child safety at the forefront." - Keira's mother Jennifer. Learn more about Keira and Keira's Law.

Last month Bill C-233 passed second reading and is now headed to the Committee of the Status of Women. In our letter, SSWC Executive Director Rhonda Lemire said "Keira’s Law will not only protect victims of violence and children. It will save them."

You can read the letter below.
