Second Story Women's Centre's Social Action Committee has written a letter in support of Bill C-233, also known as Keira's Law. The aim of this bill is to increase the level of education about domestic violence and coercive control for federally appointed judges.
Keira Kagen was 4 years old when she was killed by her father in 2020. Two weeks before her death, Keira's mother asked the court to suspend or supervise her daughter's visits with her father because she was concerned about a long-standing pattern of abusive behaviour that had begun to increase. A judge adjourned the request to allow an investigation and for Keira's father to respond, but Kiera was killed before before that could happen.
"....Keira was failed by a court system which is systemically uninformed about domestic violence, and did not put child safety at the forefront." - Keira's mother Jennifer. Learn more about Keira and Keira's Law.
Last month Bill C-233 passed second reading and is now headed to the Committee of the Status of Women. In our letter, SSWC Executive Director Rhonda Lemire said "Keira’s Law will not only protect victims of violence and children. It will save them."
