Resources to End Overdose in Our Communities on International Overdose Awareness Day

Did you know that free Naloxone (Narcan) kits are available throughout the South Shore, through the NS Take Home Naloxone Program? See the list of locations where you can obtain a Naloxone kit and the 20 minute training on how to use it to reverse an overdose of Opioids.

On International Overdose Day (August 31), we would like to remember, without stigma, those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends that are left behind.

The aim of International Overdose Awareness Day is also to end overdose deaths. With better understanding of how to prevent overdose and assist someone who has overdosed, more kindness and empathy and less stigma towards folks who use substances, overdose death is preventable.

So let's talk about overdose: it could save a life.

Not all substances are the same, so not all overdoses look or present the same, and a different response might be required depending on the situation. Learn the different signs of OD and what to do with these quick fact sheets on the following substances:
  • Alcohol
  • Opioids
  • Stimulants (Amphetamines, Cocaine, Ecstacy/MDMA)
  • Crystal Methamphetamine
  • Depressants
  • New Psychoactive Substances
Finally, there is a new national phone number to call to help prevent and respond to overdoses called the National Overdose Response Service (NORS). The number for NORS is 1-888-688-NORS (6677).

How does it work?
"
The national phone line connects callers using a potentially deadly substance to volunteers who check in periodically and alert 911 if there is no response.Callers can also provide contact information in advance for someone nearby with a naloxone kit — a potentially life-saving option in remote areas with long emergency response times."
Read more about NORS' first year in operation, and what you can expect when you call.

Today is National Grief Awareness Day. We would like to share some resources from our Mental Health and Wellness Resources page to help support someone experiencing grief and let you know about a new grief support group coming to Second Story Women's Centre this Fall.

Halifax Hospice - Free Counselling and Programming
  • Up to four free sessions of one-on-one grief counselling. Available to any adult in NS, via phone, online or in-person (if vaccinated). Do not need to have used the Hospice services to access counselling.
  • A variety of support groups, such as virtual, in-person, 'On The Go' (while walking through Point Pleasant Park). All free, all available to any adult in NS. (Please note their in-person and On the Go groups meet in Halifax, but folks from outside HRM are welcome!)
  • An 8-week closed counselling-style bereavement group starting up in October 2022.

South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society often has programming to support folks in our community who have recently lost or are preparing to lose a loved one. Join their e-newsletter list or follow their Facebook to learn when the next Death Cafe or Cooking for Care session is coming up next!

National Emergency Survivor Support Fund - NESS
YWCA Canada has recently announced the creation of a national fund to help survivors of IPV/DV/GBV leave abusive living conditions, emergency shelters or precarious living situations.

YWCA Halifax is one of the YWCA locations administering the fund. A grant of up to $1000 is available to help pay for things like first/last month’s rent, moving and storage expenses, furniture, utilities arrears or set-up costs, expenses related to attaining permanent resident status or Canadian citizenship; and/or other essential expenses related to leaving violence and establishing safe, stable housing.
This fund is available to all women, trans, Two-Spirit or gender-diverse people who are 16 years of age or older in Nova Scotia who are seeking support to leave abusive living conditions, leave emergency shelters or precarious housing conditions (staying with family/friends; couch-surfing or living unhoused) they were accessing as a result of experiencing violence. For full details and how to apply, head to www.tessns.ca/tess-blog/the-national-emergency-survivor-support-fund-ness.

 Neighbours, Friends and Family Campaign
This is a public education campaign to raise awareness of the signs of domestic violence so that people close to an at-risk woman or an abusive man can help. It was first developed by the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children at Western University, and has been adapted by the NS Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the NS Legal Information Society specifically for Nova Scotians.

The NFF Campaign is a series of brochures and videos that can be easily shared on social media. Topics include 'How to help someone with an abusive partner,' 'How to talk to someone who is abusive' safety planning, 'How to spot the signs of domestic violence' and more. We encourage everyone to take a look and, if possible, share these resources to help increase the understanding of the part we all must play in ending domestic violence.
